Why do I have to be aware about cookies on the internet?

Everything you do on the internet can be followed. This way a lot of authorities/companies built up a profile of you without you knowing. They can optain information about who you are, where you are, what you are doing, with whom you are doing things, what you are looking for, what you are interested in, what you buy and lots more. All the data and knowledge which is collected of you often will be analyzed and/or will be sold to other parties/companies.

U will notice very little to nothing of this activity as a user on the internet, therefore you often will be inclined to accept all cookies right away to be able to browse and surf on the internet. Often it's thought 'why should I worry, I have nothing to hide?'. But why would you want to share your personal information with parties/companies who are making money with your personal information?

You can compare it a little with with a situation in which I ask you if I may see your personal pictures, emails or messages. Your answer will rightfully probably be: 'no that's private!', this also applies to you personal data which is obtained and collected of you when you just accept cookies. Another good example: when you buy products in a physical shop and you want to pay at the counter and you will be asked the following questions before you are allowed to pay for your products:

  • Which stores have you been already?
  • Which products have you already looked for?
  • What are you interested in?
  • What have you bought recently?
  • Which shop are you going later today?

If you were in a physical shop you wouldn't want to answer all the above questions, but when you accept cookies you accept answering these kind of questions. Try to be aware and to think carefully if you're really sure if you want to accept cookies or not of a curtain website.
